A Sandy Love Story

Love is in the air. Mostly because we’re trying desperately to ward off the snowy chill of February, but also because of that heart-shaped holiday awaiting us at the end of the week. Whether you think it’s a perfect time for romance or a total Hallmark sham, you can’t lose if you simply look at it as an excuse to get yourself somewhere beautiful, ASAP. So without any further boxes of chocolates or sappy gift cards, we give you something much better: 10 beaches for a not-so-wintry romance.

1) Maldives

This one’s a bit of a cheat. It’s not the beaches themselves, but the over-water villas in Maldives that we adore so much. Or the over-water hammocks, in this case. What’s not to love?

2) Cape Tribulation, Australia

There are about 4,000,000 worthwhile beaches to play From Here to Eternity on in the land of Oz, and we recommend visiting all of them. But whatever you do, don’t miss secluded Cape Trib, where the rainforest meets the ocean (and is the perfect backdrop for that kiss).

3) Atins & Lencois Maranhenses, Brazil

Privacy and seclusion are number one when it comes to romance, and you don’t get much closer to the edge of the earth than Atins. At low tide the sandbars seem to go on forever; perfect for those really, really long walks on the beach.

4) Lonely Bay, New Zealand

Sad name, gorgeous setting. Our New Zealand trip planner, Mike Poppe, recently visited the area, and can give you some fantastic tips for a trip for two that’s far from lonely.

5) Zanzibar, Tanzania

Despite over-development in the area, Zanzibar still features some hidden gems that put all the other white sand in the world to shame. It’s hard not to feel that warm and fuzzy feeling when you’re looking at this view.

6) Boulders Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

If your version of romance comes with tuxedoed butlers, but your budget is a little tight to pay for them, may we suggest these delightful stand-ins? Sure, you may never actually get that bottle of champagne you paid for, but the entertainment is priceless.

7) Hoi An, Vietnam

The only thing more picturesque than a white sand beach is a gorgeously lit infinity pool overlooking a white sand beach. The Nam Hai in Hoi An pulls out all the stops for you; it’s tough to find a higher level of service.

8) Whitsundays, Australia

Hill Inlet and Whitehaven beach are often listed among the finest beaches in the world; the shifting sandbars make the view a little different every day. If romantic lookouts are your cup of saltwater, this should be topping your travel hit list. We dare you not to kiss up here.

9) Lagos, Portugal

Drama is the name of the game in Lagos. Every beach and cove is backed by epic cliff-sides, and brilliantly blue skies are always on the menu. If you’re looking to have your breath taken away, we’d highly recommend this spot.

10) Grace Bay, Turks & Caicos

Last but not least, the impeccable Amanyara provides a private beach with plenty of opportunity to be swept off your feet. On an island this close to home, we’re wondering why you’re still staring at the snow in your backyard. Time to get on the love train. Or plane, as the case may be.

Amy plans to squint at the snow until it looks like a blindingly white beach this Valentine’s Day. She’s accepting all generous donations of fine chocolates for the occasion.

Time to get on the love train. Or plane, as the case may be.
