Township tourism is a delicate matter, and in its worst form resembles a trip to the zoo. It is important to see how the other half (or seven eighths) live, but it has to be done responsibly.
The best models involve participation rather than sheer voyeurism – where interaction and exchange are key elements of a visit. Giving of oneself is far more important than the giving of money or things.
The Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) aims to empower disadvantaged Africans through the provision of sustainable transport and bicycle-related income generation opportunities. They take battered bicycles from developed countries and bring them to South Africa and Namibia, setting up community-based bicycle workshops in townships where transport is a major issue. Locals are trained as mechanics and soon they are running their own shops, fixing up and renting out bicycles to all who are in need.
Trufflepig works with BEN in South Africa and Namibia, offering our guests a chance to see these projects in action and tour through the communities on rented bicycles. It is a brilliant way to get involved, give back, and take home an experience far richer than any meal or luxury hotel.
